Given the chaos overtaking college football on a week-to-week basis, it’s fair to consider the possibility that the sport could witness a 3-loss team reach the College Football Playoff this season.
To do so would require a high-quality strength of schedule, and thus likely only a team from the SEC could measure up to what’s needed.
More specifically, CBS Sports’ Danny Kanell believes that Lane Kiffin‘s first LSU side is primed to be just that team, as the Bayou Bengals are still set to face a loaded slate of games but boast a strong résumé with just a pair of losses already.
“There is going to be a 9-3 team in, and I think LSU is one of the best resumes that can make the strongest case,” Kanell said. “Especially with them having lost earlier, you wanna finish strong. Look at Texas and Alabama, they’re losing now so everybody’s down on them. LSU can gain some momentum coming down the home stretch.”
That home stretch includes a gauntlet following a bye week for Kiffin & Co. The Tigers will welcome Alabama to Death Valley for their annual showdown before hosting Texas for Senior Night festivities the following week.
Then, back-to-back road games against Tennessee and Arkansas close out the regular-season slate for LSU, with the trip to Neyland Stadium looming large.
