The SEC and Big Ten had a handful of matchups in Week 2. When the Oklahoma Sooners fell flat against the Michigan Wolverines, it looked like the SEC might come out on the wrong end of those contests. Instead, the conference’s members rallied together for some impressive wins. Now, they’re dominating Danny Kanell’s weekly rankings.
Early Sunday morning, Kanell revealed his top 12 teams in college football. The SEC claimed seven spots on his list, increasing its representation by one following Week 1.
Despite adding a team, there was significant turnover in the makeup of the SEC schools in Kanell’s rankings. The Texas Longhorns, LSU Tigers, Ole Miss Rebels and Alabama Crimson Tide were all holdovers from Week 1. The Auburn Tigers and Georgia Bulldogs both fell off of Kanell’s sheet. In their stead, the Tennessee Volunteers, Texas A&M Aggies and Mississippi State Bulldogs joined the list.
Tennessee, following its season opening win vs. Furman, took its show on the road and beat the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 45-24. Texas A&M hosted the Arizona State Sun Devils, but also won in dominant fashion (48-20) thanks to an outstanding fourth quarter. Last but certainly not least, Mississippi State quarterback Kamario Taylor drove his hype train up another notch by pushing the Bulldogs to a 38-13 victory against the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
Notre Dame, Miami, Michigan, Duke and SMU were the five non-SEC schools in Kanell’s rankings.
