3 SEC quarterbacks were recognized by the Davey O’Brien Award this week. The Davey O’Brien Foundation utilized its “Davey Double” this week to honor 16 quarterbacks instead of its usual 8.
All players who made the Great 8 list are officially added to the Davey O’Brien Award’s Midseason Watch List. The Davey O’Brien Award is presented after the season to the best quarterback in the NCAA. Last year’s winner was Miami quarterback Cam Ward.
The first SEC quarterback to make the list was Ole Miss QB Trinidad Chambliss. Chambliss led Ole Miss to a victory over No. 4 LSU and Garrett Nussmeier. He completed 23 of his 39 passing attempts for 314 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception. He also added 71 yards on the ground. Chambliss took over for Austin Simmons when he went down in Week 3 against Arkansas.
The second SEC quarterback to be recognized by the Davey O’Brien Award this week was Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia. Vanderbilt beat Utah State 55-35 this past weekend, and Pavia had another great performance. The QB completed 26 of his 34 passes for 321 yards, 5 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Pavia was also Vanderbilt’s leading rusher with 79 yards, and he added another touchdown. Pavia and Vanderbilt take on the last SEC QB on the list this upcoming weekend.
Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson is the final SEC QB to be recognized by the Davey O’Brien Award this week. Simpson led Alabama into Sanford Stadium and snapped the Bulldogs’ 33-game home winning streak. Simpson was spectacular, completing 24 of his 38 passing attempts for 276 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also had a rushing touchdown and 12 yards on the ground.
