A day after closing practice to reporters, Hugh Freeze still undecided on QB situation
If Hugh Freeze has determined his new starting quarterback in the wake of Chad Kelly’s injury, he’s not ready to make that news public.
The Ole Miss said during Wednesday’s SEC coaches teleconference that he and his staff won’t make that decision until Thursday or Friday, despite a report surfacing that claimed true freshman Shea Patterson will start against Texas A&M this weekend.
Freeze on Monday hinted he didn’t want to burn the former 5-star prospect’s redshirt this season. He said redshirt freshman quarterback Jason Pellerin, who filled in for Kelly after he got injured last Saturday, would get most of the first-team snaps and named a few other non-quarterbacks who could be used at the position in emergency situations.
“Practice went well, Pellerin and some other guys took reps,” Freeze said Wednesday. “Jason played well last week, and we want to do the right thing.”
Freeze’s decision not to comment on the quarterback situation isn’t surprising given he closed practice to the media Tuesday.

Though it’s still unconfirmed if Patterson will start, Aggies coach Kevin Sumlin talked about the highly coveted recruit during his portion of the teleconference.
“I saw a lot of him. He was a guy we had conversations with, but we are very familiar with that area,” Sumlin said. “We were in touch with him early. He was very talented, one of the top prospects coming out. We recruited him heavily.”
