Donovan Stiner is from Houston, Texas, but the junior safety for Florida is well aware of the importance of the opener against Miami to his teammates, especially for those who grew up around the Orlando area.
The Camping World Kickoff game is set to be the most watched event of the Week 0 weekend as the Gators are a touchdown favorite over the Hurricanes team led by a new coaching staff and head coach Manny Diaz.
“I think we can prove that we’re the best in the state,” Stiner said, according to reporters Nick De La Torre and Kassidy Hill. “With a lot of guys on our team that are from that area it’s a big game to us.”
Stiner started 12 games at safety a year ago, with 49 tackles, two interception, and a memorable fourth-down sack to seal the win at Mississippi State.
There is always a wild card with a new staff, but this time, Florida is preparing for new Miami offensive coordinator Dan Enos, who most recently was at Alabama, but previously coached at Arkansas. Stiner said the Gators are watching film of Enos’ days at Arkansas to prepare for the Miami attack. Stiner said Florida believes that Jeff Thomas is the Canes’ best receiver.
