Former LSU head coach and new Tigers assistant coach Ed Orgeron has kept his finger on the pulse of Louisiana football fans – which is how Ed O knew Brian Kelly would have an uphill climb to fit in from the very start.

Appearing on Pardon My Take on Friday, Orgeron was asked about Kelly’s infamous speech at an LSU basketball game in December 2021 – days after he was formally introduced as Orgeron’s replacement – and spoke to the crowd with an obviously fake Cajun accent.

“It’s over,” Orgeron immediately responded. “You ain’t got a chance. You ain’t got a chance, man. Not only did the fans see it, the players saw that. And they’re like… hmm. One of the things is that players have to trust you. You have to be who you are. If you try and be somebody that you ain’t, they’re going to smell it right away.”

Kelly managed a pair of 10-win seasons to begin the post-Orgeron era at LSU but failed to crack the Top 10 in the final College Football Playoff rankings both seasons. Kelly then led the program to a disappointing 9-4 season in 2024 and was fired eight games into the 2025 season after a 5-3 start.

LSU hired controversial Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin in December, who brought Orgeron – who led the Tigers to a 51-20 record and the 2019 CFP title – back to LSU as an assistant coach earlier this week.
