Will Muschamp each week shows how he examines the South Carolina opponent through film study.
The South Carolina coach showed Clemson this week, and he went position by position on the breakdown of the Tigers’ offense against Boston College, from pass protection, to how receivers “attack the ball” and how freshman QB Trevor Lawrence has excelled this season.
“This is your typical 50/50 ball,” he said about the first offensive play on the screen. “You’re going to put the ball up and let your receiver go get it, and Trevor does a nice job of letting his guys go get the football. It’s going to be key in the game. There’ll probably be six, eight, 10 50/50 balls that you’ve got to come out on top of, and they’ve got some talented guys.”
On defense, he showed Clemson against Syracuse, and explained how the Tigers used a “bear” defense to create a one-on-one situation for the offensive line, and man coverage in the secondary.
“As Syracuse is changing their look and play, Clemson is changing their defense,” Muschamp said. “I guess the center busted here, but create the one-on-one and Tre Lamar makes the tackle. A lot of negative plays for a lot of free runners in the run game, and at the quarterback as well.”
Given this rivalry game comes late in the season, and the coaches meeting for the third time, there should be plenty of video available, and little surprise entering the Palmetto Bowl, which is set to kick off at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Clemson.
