Florida is ready to give sophomore quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. his first career collegiate start on Saturday at No. 7 Texas, according to a report on Friday afternoon by On3 insider Pete Nakos.
If Jones does get the nod in the noon ET SEC matchup on ABC, he would be replacing Aaron Philo, who has been the starter all year so far during Jon Sumrall‘s first season in Gainesville, throwing for 1,341 yards with 9 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.
Philo has also rushed for 3 TDs, but he’ll be replaced as the starting signal-caller in Week 7 as Philo “works through a shoulder injury,” according to Nakos’ report.
Nakos’ report also noted that the decision to go with Jones over Philo isn’t official. “A final decision will be made Saturday morning,” according to the On3 report.
But Jones took first-team reps throughout this week leading up to the Texas matchup, with Philo being “limited,” according to Nakos. While not having started a game yet, Jones has played in the second half of 5 games this season for Sumrall. He’s thrown for 252 yards with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.
Philo has been listed as questionable this week on the SEC injury report, and it was reported by Nakos on Thursday that he would likely be a game-time decision on Saturday.
Now, there’s apparently another decision by Florida that’s set to be made on Saturday morning in the leadup to the early kickoff in Austin.
With Florida’s quarterback situation apparently in limbo on the eve of Saturday’s Week 7 showdown, here is what the Kalshi market is currently saying about the Gators’ chances to pull off the road upset over Texas in Austin:
