Florida star wideout Vernell Brown III gets change in status for Week 5 matchup at Mizzou
Florida got some bad news on Friday night regarding one of its star offensive players.
Sophomore wide receiver Vernell Brown III was downgraded to doubtful for Saturday afternoon’s ranked SEC showdown at Mizzou. The 8th-ranked Gators and 25th-ranked Tigers will clash at 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC in Columbia, with Florida trying to stay unbeaten in Year 1 under Jon Sumrall while Mizzou tries to bounce back from last week’s loss to Mississippi State.
But the 4-0 Gators might have to win on the road without Brown, who injured his knee during the second quarter of last week’s home victory over Ole Miss. An MRI on the knee earlier this week revealed some positivity, that Brown did not suffer a long-term injury. At that time, Sumrall wasn’t sure about a timeline for a return from the injury, leaving his status for Week 5 in doubt.
Apparently, the chances for Brown to play on Saturday have taken a hit, with him being downgraded in Friday night’s SEC injury report.
Brown has emerged as Florida’s top outside weapon in 2026, leading the Gators in catches (17) and receiving yards (271). He’s also caught 2 touchdowns.
Last season, Brown caught 40 passes for 512 yards, and he had taken his play up a few notches this season before suffering the knee injury last week.
Florida might have to play Saturday without one of its big weapons, as the Gators try to keep stacking wins in 2026. Here is what the Kalshi market is currently saying about Florida’s potential victory total this season:
