The Washington Redskins didn’t know what they were signing up for when they signed former South Carolina DB D.J. Swearinger to a contract this offseason.
However, early on in training camp, the fifth-year player has shown what he’s made of, bringing his unique brand of vocal leadership to the Redskins’ practice sessions.
According to Redskins.com, his teammates are loving the energy he brings on the defensive side of the ball:
โYou canโt shut him up,โ said cornerbackย Bashaud Breeland. โHe brings the energy.โ
Even the offensive players are entertained by Swearinger’s trash talk, as they know it comes from a place of trying to help the team get better:
โI mean, heโs backing up what heโs talking, so it ainโt like you can call him out on a lot,โ left tackleย Trent Williams said. โItโs quiet out there, no music, sometimes you just get tired of hearing it and you just give him a little chatter back, but I mean for the most part, itโs nice, itโs clean, itโs healthy competitiveness and itโs what we need.”
Swearinger played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2016, appearing in all 16 games and intercepting three passes. He also added 56 tackles and two sacks.
