Former Tennessee defensive coordinator Tim Banks is reportedly staying in the SEC for his next gig. Auburn is reportedly hiring Banks as the program’s new safeties coach, per Nathan King.
Banks and new Auburn head coach Alex Golesh worked together for two seasons at Tennessee, 2021 and ’22. Golesh departed Rocky Top after the ’22 campaign to become the new head coach at South Florida. Banks remained UT’s defensive coordinator and safeties coach through the 2025 season.
A veteran assistant, Banks has 3 decades of coaching experience. Tennessee was his first SEC gig after previous stops at Penn State, Illinois, Central Michigan, Maryland, Memphis and elsewhere.
At Auburn, Banks will coach under veteran defensive coordinator DJ Durkin. One of Golesh’s first moves was to retain Durkin, who served as the interim head coach of the Tigers after Hugh Freeze‘s firing.
Golesh has been stacking former coordinators on his defensive staff. In addition to Banks, Coleman Hutzler is also part of Golesh’s inaugural staff. Hutzler, who served as Mississippi State’s defensive coordinator the past 2 seasons, will coach AU’s edge rushers.
Tennessee coach Josh Heupel recently elected to part with Banks after 5 seasons. The Volunteers are reportedly set to hire Jim Knowles as the program’s new defensive coordinator.
