Garrett Nussmeier took the podium at SEC Media Days to field questions from reporters regarding his final season in college football at LSU.
Nussmeier is Louisiana through and through. He spoke to reporters how proud he is to represent the Tigers as the starting quarterback, and while at the podium was asked about who his favorite quarterbacks were while he was growing up. He deferred to watching his dad (coach Doug Nussmeier) and his quarterbacks in his answer while also mentioning Drew Brees.
“Growing up I always watched my dad’s players, so I always idolized Drew Stanton, Jake Locker, and AJ McCarron. Those were my guys growing up and, as far as just football in general, Drew Brees was always my favorite player… I was never the biggest kid, so I always felt like I played a similar way to him, and I always had to anticipate as he did and part of what helped me into the passer I am now.”
Nussmeier took some time to absolutely roast his father as well, saying he had to watch his tape on a VCR “because he’s so old.”
“Ultimately my favorite play of all time has always been my dad just watching him and his college highlights on the VCR tape, because he’s so old, or some of his his highlights with the Saints and things like that. So, I’ve always idolized my dad since I was a kid, he’s accomplished everything that that I dream of accomplish in one day.
Nussmeier is expected to be one of the best quarterbacks in the country, and that’s in part thanks to an incredible supporting cast that includes receivers Barion Brown, Nic Anderson and Aaron Anderson, to name a few. While LSU has some O-linemen to replace, RB Caden Durham should be a weapon for the Tigers as well.
LSU kicks off its season on August 30 against Clemson at Memorial Stadium in South Carolina.
