Greg McElroy shares thoughts on Mizzou’s blowout victory over Florida
Greg McElroy watched Mizzou take apart a Florida team that had done most everything right in September.
But on the first Saturday of October, the then-8th-ranked Gators ran into a buzzsaw in Columbia, as the Tigers rolled up 560 total yards in dismantling Florida to hand the Gators their first loss of the season. While Mizzou improved to 4-1 on the season and evened its SEC mark at 1-1, the Tigers shot up the AP Poll on Sunday, moving up 11 spots from No. 25 to No. 14.
Mizzou took a 20-10 halftime lead on Florida with 10 points just before halftime. Then it simply owned the second half, holding UF to 7 points in the final 30 minutes while putting up 25 as it pulled away to a shockingly easy victory over Jon Sumrall‘s team.
The day belonged to Eli Drinkwitz‘s team, and McElroy broke it all down on his Always College Football podcast.
“They go for 220 (yards) on the ground, and they held the best running game in the country to marginal yardage,” said McElroy, with Mizzou holding Florida’s ground game to 42 yards on Saturday, to be exact. “(Mizzou quarterback) Austin Simmons, he was incredible, threw for almost 240 (yards) in the first half. He now has 13 touchdowns against 0 picks this year. And Jamal Roberts carried it 24 times for 211 (yards) and 3 scores. … Look, it’s pretty fascinating watching all this. … Very, very impressive performance. Eli Drinkwitz himself said tough teams stop the run, and they run the ball and they cover kicks. And that’s exactly what they did (on Saturday).”
Mizzou will try to keep rolling in Week 6 when it remains home to play Texas A&M (noon ET, ABC). Here is what the Kalshi market is currently saying about the Tigers’ chances to prevail again in Columbia against an SEC opponent:
