SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey sat down to talk with SEC Network’s Paul Finebaum following the Regions Tradition Pro-Am event in Birmingham, Alabama. Much of the SEC was in attendance, which gave Finebaum and other media an excuse to ask some questions pertaining to the coming season of college football.
Sankey briefly went over the recent CFP meetings and the talking points that came from them. Specifically, he mentioned that the committee discussed the schedule for Tuesday rankings show, but importantly noted that they did not discuss eliminating the weekly rankings altogether. Sankey also noted that the group had a brief conversation on the format of the CFP related to the 2027 season.
“We had a brief conversation about format, really understanding the timing of decisions that relate to the 2027 season. By the end of November, I think December 1 is the actual date, we’d have to make a decision if we vary from 12, and last year decided to not vary from the 12-team format. I think those were the 2 key issues.”
Interestingly, Sankey went out of his way to note the addition of the 1-seed getting to choose their path based on location. Before the change, the path for all seeds was determined by geography.
“There are some differences, it’s interesting next year, the opportunity for the 1-seed to pick its path. The location of its quarterfinal bowl, the location of its semifinal bowl. The 2-seed to have a quarterfinal bowl option and obviously placed in the semifinal bowl, we talked about those logistical issues.”
