Heather Dinich says Ohio State loss will ‘haunt’ Texas

Texas’s season got off to a disappointing start, but there’s a long way to go. ESPN’s Heather Dinich offered a complex assessment of the Longhorns’ College Football Playoff outlook during a Sunday appearance on SportsCenter.
“I want to remind everybody that Notre Dame lost to Northern Illinois last year and played for the national title, so deep breath, everybody,” Dinich said. “But at the same time, this head-to-head result is going to haunt Texas through Selection Day. Because, as long as the records are comparable, the committee will have Ohio State ahead of Texas. That matters for seeding.”

Seeding, of course, can be the difference in getting a bye or playing another game. Texas, of course, cannot be thinking about the postseason right now. Dinich noted that the Longhorns should be able to take advantage of an easy stretch of the schedule before getting into SEC play.
“Here’s the good news for Texas. They don’t play a Power 4 opponent again over the next 3 weeks,” Dinich said. “Their SEC opener is at Florida, but they’ve got to get better if they’re going to win that game.”
ESPN’s FPI remains high on the Longhorns, as Texas is still No.1 with the analytic model despite the Week 1 loss at Ohio State.
