Florida State vs. Miami may not have a fancy name for the game or call itself a “bowl,” but it is one of the premier rivalries in all of college football. It has a nice history of 69 games, with Miami leading 36-33 entering Saturday’s showdown in Tallahassee.
Miami coach Mario Cristobal was first part of the rivalry as a player. He played for the Hurricanes from 1989-92 and then returned to UM as a grad assistant in 1998 before a 3-season stint as a tight ends and offensive line coach (2004-06). He’d become the head coach of his alma mater in 2022.
Florida State coach Mike Norvell has been part of the rivalry since 2020. He actually missed that year’s game after testing positive for COVID-19 before the game. Norvell enjoyed a 3-game winning streak in the rivalry from 2021-23, but that was snapped by Cristobal’s squad last season in Miami Gardens.
This season, Miami is off to a 4-0 start. The Hurricanes already have high-profile wins over then-No. 6 Notre Dame, then-No. 18 USF and Florida. Veteran quarterback Carson Beck, a transfer from Georgia, is leading the way with 972 passing yards and 7 TDs on the season.
The Seminoles also have a big-time win of note, but don’t enter the game unblemished. FSU stunned then-No. 8 Alabama to open the season with a statement victory. In ACC play, however, the Noles stumbled on the road at Virginia in Week 5. FSU is led by QB Tommy Castellanos, who has thrown for 848 yards and 4 touchdowns, rushing for 217 yards and 4 scores.
