With the season opener rapidly approaching, Auburn will now be down some depth along the defensive line.
Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze announced on Monday that freshman defensive lineman Antonio Coleman is suspended “indefinitely” due to violating team rules. The specifics of what the violation is weren’t publicly announced.
The 6-foot-1, 256-pound Alabama native arrived on campus in January after also receiving offers from Alabama, Arkansas, and Clemson. Coleman was regarded by 247 Sports as the nation’s No. 19 defensive lineman as well as the No. 11 player from Alabama for the Class of 2025.
During his high school career, Coleman amassed 153 tackles, 53 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, 27 QB hurries, and scored 3 touchdowns. Coleman was picked twice for the first-team class 6A all-state team.
Despite posting a 5-7 record last season, Auburn’s defense ranked 28th nationally in points per game (21.3). Auburn’s defense will have to step up to the challenge in its season opener at Baylor on Aug. 29 (8 p.m. ET/FOX). Baylor scored 34.4 points per game last season, which ranked No. 19 in the nation. Auburn is looking for its first winning season under Freeze, who has an 11-14 mark in 2 seasons at the helm.
