The season has not gone as most would have hoped in Starkville but Mississippi State is returning to the postseason for the 10th consecutive year and Joe Moorhead is now 2-0 in his Egg Bowl career after leading his team to a 21-20 win over Ole Miss Thursday night.

This victory was much-needed for Moorhead as speculation out of Starkville placed the Mississippi State coach was on thin ice after his team started entered the Egg Bowl with a 5-6 record and a 2-5 league mark.

Following Mississippi State’s sixth win of the season, Moorhead got testy during his postgame press conference and challenged those suggesting he was not the right fit in Starkville.

He wasn’t the only one with those thoughts as two of his players weighed in on the speculation surrounding their heading into the Egg Bowl.

“I feel as if no coach in the country loves his players like Coach Moorhead… I feel like he’s the guy for the job, it takes time,” Kylin Hill said of Moorhead after the MSU running back rushed the ball 27 times for 132 yards against Ole Miss. “I know a lot of guys want to win now but that’s not the process. We started the season off with a lot of suspensions, a lot of guys injured, and to be where we are at right now, it’s amazing.”

Those sentiments were echoed by Garrett Shrader, who started his first career Egg Bowl on Thursday.

“He has a certain set of beliefs on how a program should be run and just getting everyone to buy into that is the biggest thing,” Shrader said. “I absolutely believe in him, in everything he says and does. He’s going to be my coach and we are going to win a bunch more games.”

They weren’t alone, as four-star Mississippi State commit Dillon Johnson also offered his support of Moorhead after the game. Johnson is one of the state’s top prospects in the 2020 recruiting cycle.
