Joe Tessitore’s call of Texas DL Maraad Watson’s touchdown draws rave reviews
Some play-by-play broadcasters naturally exude more energy than others. Joe Tessitore, often found in the broadcast booth for football and boxing, never has an issue ramping up his intensity. On Saturday night in Austin, he got a terrific opportunity to do so.
Late in the first half of Mississippi State-Texas, Bulldog quarterback AJ Swann took a shotgun snap on 2nd-and-7 from the Longhorns’ 34-yard line. Moments later, he fumbled after being hit by linebacker Rasheem Biles. The loose football took two bounces before being scooped up by defensive tackle Maraad Watson. From there, Tessitore took over.

“Ball is out! The ball is out, and it’s in the hands of [Maraad] Watson!” Tessitore exclaimed as Watson raced up the sideline with a convoy of blockers. “Three-hundred-and-thirty-three-pound Maraad Watson! Like a tractor-trailer going through the Texas night… get that guy some oxygen!”
Watson’s 61-yard fumble return touchdown was the highlight of Texas’ 31-3 victory vs. Mississippi State. Tessitore’s rousing narration of the score may have been a close second. Fans gave him his flowers on social media.
Where Tessitore will be in Week 10 has yet to be determined. The Longhorns, though, will travel to Columbia, MO for a battle with the Missouri Tigers. Kickoff between Texas and Mizzou is at noon ET on Nov. 7 (ESPN).
