Joel Klatt was on the call for Indiana vs. Ohio State in Week 7, but the game that had him fired up on his show Monday afternoon was BYU and Notre Dame.

The Cougars were able to pull off the upset against the Fighting Irish, but it didn’t come without any controversy. Notre Dame had one final attempt to win the game, but a pass went incomplete and the clock expired.

In the following days after the game, the Big 12 conference released a statement saying there should have been one second remaining, which would have given the Irish one final play.

On the ‘Joel Klatt Show’, Klatt voiced his frustration with calls that directly impacted the results.

“The officiating has been hard,” Klatt said. “The officials directly impacted results, and that’s not what they are supposed to be doing. I am talking about incorrect calls. The BYU Notre Dame game was so poorly officiated at the end. I don’t understand how you’re an official and can’t officiate the game.”

It wasn’t just the last play, as there was a non-call on a pass interference late in the game as well. As Klatt also mentioned, the Alabama and Georgia game had a late obvious pass interference against the Bulldogs go uncalled.

It is harder than ever to officiate college football. The players are faster, stronger, and bigger than ever before. Combine that with the added social media presence and cameras, and the referees are in nearly an impossible job. With spots in the College Football Playoff on the line, the officiating will continue to be scrutinized by everyone around the sport.
