We’re days away from November, but the College Football Playoff picture is nowhere near close to sorted out. That especially rings true in the SEC, where ESPN’s Football Power Index gives eight teams at least a 16.9% chance to reach the CFP.
Wednesday morning, Joel Klatt took his best shot at predicting what will come of the next few weeks. He included four SEC squads in his 12-team bracket: No. 2 Georgia, No. 7 Texas, No. 8 Ole Miss and No. 11 LSU.
“We get into some of these at-large teams, I think Texas gets an at-large spot,” Klatt began after anointing Georgia the SEC Champions. “I can see Texas actually being a 10-2 team. And if they’re 10-2… they would probably be the seven seed and hosting a first-round game.”

Klatt named Ole Miss his eight seed and “SEC Championship game loser,” but had the Rebels behind the Longhorns because of their head-to-head loss. He rounds out his at-large field with LSU, who he thinks will be 9-3.
“I do think a 9-3 team gets in this thing,” Klatt said. “Look for [LSU] to get a couple big wins late in the season as they begin to play better.”
Klatt’s biggest SEC omissions are Alabama — who has FPI’s second-highest SEC playoff odds (62.9%) behind Georgia — and Kentucky, who faces Tennessee, Florida and Missouri before battling in-state rival Louisville to end the season. The Wildcats currently boast FPI’s fourth-best CFP odds (52.1%) for any SEC institution.
