Joel Klatt believes Penn State needs to take the biggest swing possible in its search to replace James Franklin.
During an appearance on The Herd with Colin Cowherd on Wednesday, Klatt was asked about the links between Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman and Penn State. He acknowledged that Penn State needs to be aggressive and said no one should be off the list for Penn State athletic director Pat Kraft to target.
In Klatt’s mind, that means Penn State’s first call should go to Nick Saban.
“If I was Pat Kraft, I would start with the biggest swing possible,” Klatt said. “I know this sounds crazy, but I think the first call I would make is Nick Saban. Just make sure that’s not going to happen. Then you start going down the list of the other coaches around the country.”
Saban has been vocal in his stance that he loves what he is doing on ESPN and that he won’t be getting back into coaching. However, rumors have persisted in recent months that the door isn’t completely closed.
Offering Saban is ultimately the biggest move that Kraft could make. To bring in arguably the greatest college football coach of all time would be a swing-for-the-moon move. This is going to be the biggest decision that Kraft makes as an athletic director, and how he will ultimately be judged at Penn State.
