Like the asteroid in Armageddon, the 24-team College Football Playoff is barreling toward Earth. Unfortunately, the general public lacks any way to stop it. Some are taking the glass half-empty attitude toward this development, but Joel Klatt is trying to remain optimistic.

On Wednesday, Klatt told KTCK-FM 96.7 The Ticket in Dallas that the SEC and Big Ten are developing schedule pacts that should come into play once CFP expansion is confirmed.

“There are scheduling agreements that are in place,” Klatt said, per FootballScoop. “We’re going to get scheduling agreements between the SEC and the Big Ten. Top-end matchups, mid-tier matchups, low-end matchups. And we’re going to be expanding the valuable matchups in the non-conference, far surpassing what we have now.”

Backers of CFP expansion have claimed the widened field would lead schools to give us more compelling non-conference games than we’ve seen in the four-team and 12-team CFP Eras. We also heard these claims when arguing for four and 12-team fields, though, and those haven’t consistently come to fruition. We’ve gotten some high-profile non-conference games, like Ohio State-Texas, Clemson-LSU and Ole Miss-Louisville, but not nearly to the degree fans expected.

Ole Miss-Texas and Indiana-Michigan headline the SEC’s and Big Ten’s respective Week 8 slates. The Hoosiers and Wolverines tangle at noon ET on FOX, while the Rebels and Longhorns battle at 7:30 p.m. ET (ABC).
