John Mateer is only 3 games into his time as Oklahoma‘s starting quarterback. However, FOX Sports’ Joel Klatt has learned that there are people within the program who are already seeing glimpses of a former Sooners Heisman Trophy winner.

During an episode of The Joel Klatt Show, Klatt revealed that the junior transfer is being compared to 2-time Pro Bowl quarterback Baker Mayfield because of his skill set and intangibles.

“I’ve talked with some people around that program. They see a lot of Baker in John Mateer. The way he handles the team and practice. The way the team loves him. That can’t be overstated when the team loves you as a quarterback, they will play hard for you,” Klatt said.

“We see this. And right now this team loves Mateer. They love his leadership style, his playability, his willingness to go out there and fight for every inch on the field that gains the respect admiration and love of your teammates. And when that happens, they play insanely hard for you. I think, OU is on the brink of a really special season, even with their insanely tough schedule.”

The 6-foot-1 Mateer is 3-0 so far as a Sooner after victories vs. Illinois State, Michigan, and Temple. Mateer has passed for 944 yards with 5 touchdowns and 3 interceptions while also rushing for 161 yards and 4 scores.

Next on the docket for Mateer and No. 11 Oklahoma is a home clash with No. 22 Auburn on Saturday (3:30 p.m. ET/ABC).
