John Mateer offers concerning postgame comment regarding read on Isaiah Sategna touchdown

Isaiah Sategna is very fast.
It was the 3rd quarter. The Oklahoma Sooners wide receiver belted off the line and sprinted through a break in the New Mexico defense up the seam on 2nd and 8 near midfield, with Oklahoma leading the Lobos 7-6.
Despite being open almost immediately, Sategna had a to wait a few precious moments to receive the football, making an adjustment that is tougher than it looks to haul in the eventual touchdown pass from QB John Mateer. Sategna’s reception wound up being the final score of the Sooners’ second win of the season.

Following the game, Mateer was asked about the play and his breakdown was pretty concerning for an SEC quarterback. Mateer admitted he skipped over Sategna in his progression and only knew he was wide open when Sooners fans started screaming. That’s why the ball was so late — Mateer just never saw his wide-open receiver streaking down the seam despite a clean pocket.
“I looked left and I kind skipped over to the 3rd read and I kinda heard everybody screaming and I was like ‘well, something must be going on’ and I see Isaiah put his hand up… I’m serious… puts his hand up and I see him,” Mateer said.
Mateer’s night was less than ideal, to put it kindly. His completion percentage looked good at 19-of-25 passing for 252 yards and 2 touchdowns, but Mateer also threw a pair of interceptions and struggled with his timing — as shown by the play and comments above.
No matter how you spin it, Mateer simply has to be better if Oklahoma is going to make any noise the remainder of this season. He better improve in a hurry, as Oklahoma is set to travel to Sanford Stadium to take on No. 2 Georgia in Week 4.
