One of the oldest and most storied rivalries in college football is set to renew this Saturday in Atlanta, where the No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs take on the No. 17 Florida Gators in the 105th edition of the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party.
This will be the first time that Gators head coach Jon Sumrall gets to experience this legendary feud between 2 of the SEC’s traditional powerhouses, and it is also likely to be the most important game of his young tenure in Gainesville as well.
Sumrall previewed the matchup Wednesday afternoon, telling reporters and Gators insider Scott Carter that he has great respect for Georgia head coach Kirby Smart and that Florida needs to “do their part” in the rivalry.
“He’s been nothing great to me, personally,” Sumrall said. “And obviously it is a tremendous rivalry. We need to do our part to make it a rivalry.”
There’s no denying that the Dawgs have gotten the best of the Gators in recent years, currently riding a 5-game win streak in the rivalry and winning 8 of the last 9 matchups between the 2 programs.
Sumrall will have a massive opportunity to turn the tide of this longstanding feud back in Florida’s favor on Saturday and secure the biggest win of his career if he can guide the Gators to victory.
