Jon Sumrall says Florida will ‘get our ass beat’ without improvement

Jon Sumrall is certainly honest.
The new Florida head coach, like just about every other coach at SEC Media Days, knows his team need to improve as it stands in late July if the Gators want to get to where they want to be. That shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. But when asked about Florida’s current status heading into the new season, Sumrall’s answer was perhaps a little too honest, skipping the coach speak entirely.
“If we don’t improve, we’re going to get our ass beat,” Sumrall said.

The Gators, unfortunately for Florida fans, know a thing or two about getting their butt kicked recently. Sumrall was brought to Gainesville to end the worst stretch of football in the Gators’ modern era. Florida hasn’t won 10+ games since 2019 despite some elite local talent, but talent has never been the issue.
Billy Napier’s personality didn’t quite mesh with the culture Florida football needs to succeed in a changing SEC. The Gators needed some charisma and fire, and that’s exactly what Jon Sumrall brings in from Tulane.
Leading Florida out of this rut will be no easy task, especially with a 9-game SEC schedule to navigate. This season the Gators have to play at Auburn, Mizzou, Florida State and Texas while hosting Ole Miss, Georgia and Oklahoma.
