The No. 16 Tennessee Volunteers are entering a much-needed bye week after suffering a brutal loss to unranked South Carolina in Week 8, a game in which the Vols were without several top playmakers.

Among the injured stars for Tennessee was junior running back and leading SEC rusher DeSean Bishop, who was knocked out of the game in the fourth quarter after taking a nasty hit from Gamecocks defensive back Peyton Williams.

Volunteers head coach Josh Heupel was asked about Bishop’s status heading into the bye during his Wednesday morning coaches teleconference, and he gave reporters some good news regarding his star tailback.

“We feel like he will be in a good spot for next week,” Heupel said. “He got some work today. We limited him some today. Part of that was the ankle, but part of that was just the volume he’s gotten in the early part of conference play, too.”

Bishop has been the main workhorse for the Vols over the first half of the campaign, currently leading all SEC rushers in yards (957) and attempts (171). He has also been the leading scorer for the Vols with 11 total touchdowns on the year.

There are few players who are more important to their respective team’s offensive success than Bishop is to Tennessee’s, so Heupel’s update is extremely encouraging for everybody on Rocky Top.
