Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel is the latest to voice their support for an expanded, 24-team College Football Playoff.
It’s only been 2 years of the expanded 12-team playoff, and there are pushes to expand even further. A new, 24-team CFP has been floated around, and after missing last year’s CFP, Heupel told Chris Low of On3 that the expanded format only makes sense in the current landscape of college football.
“The way college football is constantly changing, that probably makes the most sense,” Heupel said.
Heupel took over the Vols program in 2021. The team finished 7-6 and did not find themselves ranked in the AP poll at any point in the season. In 2022, Tennessee finished as the No. 6 in the CFP poll and missed out on the 4-team CFP.
In 2023, the Vols took a step back and finished the season ranked No. 21 in the CFP’s final poll. However, in 2024, Tennessee made its first appearance under Heupel in the CFP as a No. 7 seed in the new 12-team format, where it lost to No. 6 Ohio State 42-17.
This past season, Tennessee did not find itself ranked in the CFP’s final poll and missed out on the Playoff.
