The latest source of controversy in college football broke late last week, when reports emerged that all the power brokers at the top of the sport had agreed to an expanded 24-team College Football Playoff format.

This decision sparked a ton of outrage from fans, analysts, coaches, and pundits alike, many of whom have gone on to publicly voice their discontent and concerns about doubling the current CFP field.

One of the more prominent voices in the college football media world is none other than Josh Pate, and he joined the Rich Eisen Show on Wednesday to absolutely rail against this latest decision. Here’s what he had to say:

“College football is not a tournament sport,” Pate said. “… I don’t watch college basketball in December for that very reason. The tournament has taught me that I don’t need to watch it because it’s a tournament sport… I’m not saying that a 24 seed playoff destroys the regular season. No, it doesn’t. It cheapens it. It lowers the urgency on the biggest games.”

The importance of every regular-season game has always been one of the things that makes college football so special, which is why Pate and so many others who love the sport are disappointed by the decision to move the CFP to 24 teams.

We’ve already seen the regular season watered down in the current 12-team era, and doubling the number of slots available is only going to exacerbate that problem, and that’s exactly what Pate is pointing out here.
