Houston reportedly offers Kelvin Sampson rich new deal amid speculation he may leave for Arkansas
Kelvin Sampson has quickly turned into one of the hottest names in the college basketball coaching carousel as he’s led Houston to a 33-3 record on the season and a Sweet 16 appearance against Kentucky Friday night. Despite all the attention normally being on his team’s great postseason run, many are eager to know where Sampson will coach next season.
Following Arkansas’ decision to fire head coach Mike Anderson, the name most attached to the opening in Fayetteville has been Sampson. In fact, during his Sweet 16 press conference, Sampson was asked about the speculation regarding the Arkansas job and he didn’t do much to quell those rumors.
Well, if Arkansas truly is making a run at Sampson, Houston apparently isn’t going to give him up without a fight. According to Randy McIlvoy, sports director of KPRC-TV NBC in Houston, the school has offered Sampson a new six-year deal worth $18 million.
That’s a nice contract for a basketball program in the G5 but one that Arkansas may be willing to meet, if not exceed, to lure Sampson to Fayetteville. The question now is how high the Razorbacks are willing to go if Sampson is their guy.
