After spending the past 3 years at Ole Miss, Jacquez Jones transferred to Kentucky ahead of the 2021 season. And he’s likely going to have a big role for the Wildcats this year.
Jones had been slowed by a minor injury early in camp, but it appears that may no longer be an issue. According to Nick Roush of Kentucky Sports Radio, Jones returned to practice earlier this week after an “almost two-week absence.”
If Jones is healthy, he could be the starting middle linebacker for the Wildcats. Defensive coordinator Brad White seems confident in Jones’ ability to be ready to go.
“I think he’ll be pretty quick,” White said, per Roush. “He’s an extremely smart football player; obviously, a young man that’s played in the SEC for three years, so football moves at a little bit slower pace for him.”
Jones played in 33 games while at Ole Miss, making 19 starts and totaling 182 tackles during that time. In 2020, he started nine of the Rebels’ 10 games, and he led the team with 75 tackles. He had a career-high 13 tackles in Ole Miss’ Outback Bowl win over Indiana.
Now, Jones will look to lead a different SEC defense to success. He signed with Kentucky in June with two seasons of eligibility remaining, and he was allowed to play immediately.
