Kirby Smart evaluates Georgia’s offense, Carson Beck after Tennessee win
Kirby Smart and Georgia defeated Tennessee 31-17 on Saturday night in Athens to earn a much-needed victory for its CFP résumé.
It was a huge win for the Bulldogs on a number of fronts. In addition to this result having serious CFP implications, it was a big performance for Georgia’s confidence going forward.
UGA played one of its best offensive games of the season, especially when accounting for the competition level. Georgia averaged 6.4 yards per play in this win, which is the highest yards-per-play total that Tennessee has allowed in any game all season.
In his on-field interview with ABC’s Laura Rutledge after the game, Smart expressed confidence in quarterback Carson Beck and the Georgia offense in general.
“Beautiful,” Smart said. “Look, we’ve got good players. We’ve got a good offensive coordinator. We’ve got a good quarterback. It’s hard to play on the road in this league and I keep saying that. We don’t question ourselves from the inside out. We’ve got great competitors.”
Beck had his first interception-free game since Oct. 5 on Saturday night. He threw for 347 yards and 2 touchdowns while also rushing for a score in the win over the Vols.
Georgia now seems to be in good position to reach the College Football Playoff this season, provided it can avoid a disastrous loss to UMass or Georgia Tech at the end of the regular season.
The College Football Playoff rankings will be updated on Tuesday evening.
