Kirby Smart issues statement on passing of former Georgia assistant DJ Looney

The college football community is mourning the loss of Louisiana assistant DJ Looney. In the SEC, the 31-year old is best known as a former Mississippi State player (and later, graduate assistant), but he also spent a season on Kirby Smart’s Georgia Bulldogs staff. In 2016, Looney served as a graduate assistant working under offensive line coach Sam Pittman. Smart issued a statement to the media on Saturday.

“The sudden loss of D.J. Looney was tragic for his family and friends but also for the coaching community,” Smart said in a release. “During his time at Georgia, he demonstrated the tools that would provide an outstanding career in the profession. I know I speak for all the Georgia Bulldogs in expressing our sincerest sympathy to his family.”

A quick look at Smart’s Twitter account shows that the Dawg family is saddened by the news. Smart has retweeted his former players and assistants reacting to the news:
