Lane Kiffin insists 24-team Playoff ‘had to happen’

Lane Kiffin is going to attack the idea of a 24-team College Football Playoff field in 2027 with the same no-nonsense attitude that he takes with most everything else.

For the LSU head coach, the expected move to double the current 12-team field was an inevitability, so Kiffin isn’t fearful of what going to 24 teams in the Playoff for next season is going to do to college football.

During an appearance earlier this week on the Brandon Walker College Football Show, Kiffin was asked about the massive changes coming to the Playoff after one more season this year with the current 12-team format.

“I think it had to happen,” said Lane Kiffin about the move to 24 teams. “You could say, ‘OK, 12 (teams) is better.’ But not when you take into account the way college football is set up now. The conferences are so different, the 4 (power) conferences. And they are. … You’re not playing equal schedules, not even close.

“You had to go to more (Playoff) teams, because the system’s broke in how they pick them, and nothing against the (Playoff) committee.”

Here is Kiffin’s full explanation for why it was inevitable as well as the right move to go to a 24-team Playoff format:

While Kiffin discussed the 24-team Playoff that is apparently coming, this year’s Playoff is still 12 teams, and the battle is on for those coveted dozen spots that will be awarded in December. Here is what the Kalshi market is currently saying about the best odds to make the elite Playoff field:
