Lane Kiffin reflects on last year’s disastrous loss to Kentucky ahead of rematch

Lane Kiffin and the Ole Miss Rebels got the 2025 season off to a quick start with 63-7 victory against Georgia State in Week 1.

The team enters Week 2 with an upcoming game against the Kentucky Wildcats, a team that knocked them off in Oxford last season. The loss was the first for the team last year, and it played a huge role in the team not making it to the College Football Playoff.

While speaking with the media on Sunday, Kiffin talked about the game and how tough of day it was.

“It was horrible on all fronts. It was such a bizarre game,” Kiffin said.”So many ways that game could have gone our way and so many things went their way. It was hard to deal with….still had the ball ahead later in the game….it sucked.”

Ole Miss in that game was up 17-13 with 2:25 remaining when the Wildcats took the lead. The Rebels had one final chance to win the game, but they missed a game-tying field goal with 48 seconds left.

Kiffin has Ole Miss at a level that the program hasn’t been in a long time, but the next step is to make it to the CFP. The Rebels ended up the No. 14 team in last year’s final rankings, narrowly missing a CFP berth.

The Rebels figure to be ready to go against a Kentucky team that really struggled to win its opener, knocking off Toledo by a score of 24-16.

The Wildcats couldn’t move the ball through the air, finishing with only 85 passing yards in the opener. Kickoff is scheduled for next Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET and the game will be on ABC.
