Lane Kiffin is continuing to add to his new LSU staff, and this time, he’s adding someone from a rival SEC program. Kiffin is hiring former Florida assistant Joe Houston, according to a report from FootballScoop.
It’s not immediately clear what Houston’s official title will be at LSU. Houston most recently served under Billy Napier as special teams coordinator this season and last year was Florida’s senior special teams analyst.
Additionally, Houston was a senior special teams analyst at Alabama in 2019 under Nick Saban. Houston also served as a special teams assistant for the New England Patriots from 2020-2023.
Houston began his coaching career as a quality control coach for Toledo in 2015, followed by a 3-season stint with Iowa State as an associate for quality control (2016-2017) and special teams coordinator (2018).
During his college career, Houston was selected as an All-America kicker at USC, playing for Pete Carroll and Kiffin.
Kiffin has also kept LSU defensive coordinator Blake Baker, while bringing along Charlie Weis Jr. from Ole Miss to serve as LSU’s offensive coordinator.
Despite the turmoil this season — including firing Brian Kelly — LSU still managed a 7-5 record to earn bowl eligibility. LSU will face Houston on Dec. 27 in the Texas Bowl (9:15 p.m. ET, ESPN).
