New LSU head coach Lane Kiffin has been steadily filling out the last few spots on his new staff down in Baton Rouge, bringing on a mix of former Ole Miss staffers and mixing in several other assistants who have remained in Baton Rouge.
Kiffin landed another big win in the staffing department on Saturday, with CBS Sports insider Matt Zenitz reporting that LSU is keeping on former Brian Kelly and Ed Orgeron football ops staffer JR Belton as the program’s new assistant general manager.
A Louisiana native and former standout quarterback at Louisiana Tech, Belton has been with the Bayou Bengals since 2021, where he was hired on as director of scouting for former head coach Ed Orgeron.
Brian Kelly kept him on when he took over in 2022 and elevated him to director of recruiting, a role he held throughout Kelly’s tenure down in Baton Rouge. During this time, Belton oversaw several top recruiting classes and signed 59 players with 4 or 5-star ratings.
It’s clear that Belton has been a very valuable piece of the LSU football program over the past several years, which has led Kiffin to keep him on with yet another reported promotion.
