It looks like No. 4 Ole Miss will continue to roll with senior Trinidad Chambliss at quarterback for the time being. During his Monday press conference, Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin offered an update on redshirt sophomore quarterback Austin Simmons, who began the season as the starter but went down with an ankle injury vs. Kentucky.
“Continuing to get closer to 100 percent. He’s not there yet,” Kiffin said. “This week for him was good. We’ll see tomorrow.”
Chambliss has certainly made the most of his opportunity, as he’s now being tabbed by experts as a Heisman Trophy candidate. The former 0-star recruit who previously played at Division II Ferris State has risen to the occasion with a 3-0 record along with 300+ passing yards in each of his games. Chambliss is also averaging 5.3 yards per carry.
The 6-foot-4 Simmons passed for 576 yards with 3 touchdowns and 4 interceptions along with rushing for 61 yards and a score in his 2 games this season. Simmons began his college career at Ole Miss in 2023 as a third-stringer who redshirted. Last season, Simmons was elevated to Jaxson Dart’s primary backup.
Ole Miss hosts Washington State on Saturday at 12:45 p.m. ET (SEC Network).
