Lane Kiffin trolls Auburn, Hugh Freeze for unorthodox play-calling strategy
Lane Kiffin is at it again.
The Ole Miss head coach took a jab at Auburn’s Hugh Freeze late Wednesday night as he reacted to an interesting report out of the Plains.
According to offensive coordinator Derrick Nix, Auburn will have a different coach calling offensive plays depending on what down it is. Nix said he has the honors on 1st down, Freeze takes over on 2nd down and quarterbacks coach Kent Austin make the decision on 3rd down.
Kiffin then posed the question: Does a 4th coach call 4th downs?
As a point of clarification, Nix also told reporters this week that Freeze will have the right to overrule any call he or Austin make during a game.
Freeze, Nix and Austin were all on Auburn’s coaching staff last year as well. It’s unclear if the Tigers deployed a similar play-calling strategy in 2024. Auburn finished the 2024 season ranked 2nd in the SEC in yards-per-play despite battling quarterback issues throughout the year.
Kiffin and the Rebels will not face Auburn this season. These programs last met in 2023 when Ole Miss prevailed 28-21 on the road.
