Maalik Murphy is opting to transfer out of Texas after 2 seasons in Austin. A source told ESPN’s Pete Thamel the news on Wednesday.

Murphy started in 2 games for Steve Sarkisian this year against BYU and the overtime win over Kansas State. The former Texas QB didn’t see any action in his 1st season in 2022. Murphy accounted for 477 yards passing with 3 touchdowns and 3 interceptions while at Texas.

ESPN was told by Murphy that he won’t be with Texas for its upcoming College Football Playoff game with Washington. The Longhorns and Huskies meet in the Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day. Murphy assured fans that the decision had nothing to do with Texas.

“It’s nothing against Texas at all,” said Murphy. “I’m doing this purely for me and my future. In my eyes, I’ll always be a Longhorn and a part of this great team.”

Murphy competed with Arch Manning for snaps behind starting quarterback Quinn Ewers at Texas. It’s been reported that Ewers is likely going to stay with the program for another season as opposed to heading to the 2024 NFL Draft.

A native of Gardena (Calif.) Junipero Serra, Murphy was a former 4-star QB in the 2022 class. The 247Sports Composite ranked him as the No. 12 QB in the class.
