While at the NFL Combine, former Tennessee linebacker Curt Maggitt has directed questions regarding his name being mentioned in the Title IX lawsuit against the school to his lawyer.
On Saturday evening, his attorney spoke to the Associated Press:
Jeff Hagood said via text message Saturday that “if, in fact, Mr. Bowles has sworn that my client, Curt Maggitt punched him at any time … that is simply a false statement.”
Former teammate Drae Bowles signed an amended complaint filed Wednesday that stated Maggitt punched Bowles for assisting a woman who had been raped by two UT football players.
When speaking to SEC Country earlier on Saturday, Maggitt compared the claim to the accusations made against another former Volunteer:
“Anybody can make up a story and put your name in it,” he said. “Peyton Manning, for example. His name has been brought up. That’s 20 years ago. Whatever the case is, you can’t control who writes the story. The only thing I can control is the way I carry myself and my character.”
To clarify: Was he saying reports of his involvement were false?
“Without a doubt,” he said. “Without (people) knowing the facts and knowing what was going on.”
The plaintiffs’ lawyer noted to the AP that Maggitt previously admitted to assault:
David Randolph Smith, the lawyer representing the plaintiffs, responded by pointing out that the amended complaint states that Maggitt acknowledged to police that he assaulted Bowles.
