The No. 1 Miami Hurricanes are preparing to face the No. 11 Notre Dame Fighting Irish this Saturday in what is shaping up to be one of the biggest matchups of the entire college football season.

The Hurricanes will be making their first trip to South Bend since 2017, and there will be massive College Football Playoff implications on the line for both themselves, and the Irish. As such, the Canes will need all hands on deck if they want to escape Notre Dame Stadium with a win.

Unfortunately, it looks like Miami might be without its top playmaker for this all-important matchup, with ESPN insider Pete Thamel reporting on Wednesday that star wide receiver Malachi Toney’s status for Saturday is “uncertain.”

Per Thamel, the Heisman candidate is currently dealing with an ankle injury but intends to “press” in an attempt to play against the Irish given the magnitude and postseason implications of the matchup.

Toney broke out as a true freshman during Miami’s run to the National Championship Game in 2025 and has since developed into one of the top players in all of college football. As of this writing, he has recorded 1,073 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns on 73 receptions in 2026, all of which rank first in the ACC and top three nationally among qualified pass catchers in.

Simply put, Toney is the engine that powers Miami’s top-ranked scoring offense, and losing him against Notre Dame would be a massive blow for the Hurricanes at such a critical point in the season.
