Mike Elko apologizes for ‘cesspool’ comments after Week 6 loss at Mizzou
Mike Elko was frustrated after Saturday afternoon’s loss at Mizzou, and the Texas A&M head coach let those frustrations get the best of him in a rant that included attacks on the Texas A&M online community.
After the 27-6 loss in Columbia dropped the Aggies to 3-3 overall and 1-3 in the SEC, Elko told reporters afterward that he wasn’t interested in satisfying fans who are vocal on social media platforms. Elko took specific aim at members of TexAgs, which is an online community run by Billy Liucci.
Eko referred to those fans as a “cesspool” during the postgame press conference, saying: “There’s a difference to me between the fan base and social media. So there’s one group that I really don’t care much about. Billy’s cesspool can go be Billy’s cesspool.”
For those remarks, Elko apologized 2 days later during his Monday session with reporters.
“In the heat of the moment, I think I answered a question in a way that I certainly regret,” Mike Elko said. “Everybody knows that I have a tremendous relationship with Billy. I appreciate Billy. I appreciate him being there (on Monday). There’s nothing about Billy and I that have ever been off since 2018. I think everybody knows that I appreciate our fan base and everything that they are about and what they mean to Texas A&M. Outside of that, I’ll leave it alone, and so I regret the way it was taken, I regret the way it came out, I regret the way it ran, and so that was never my intention.”
Elko went on to take complete ownership for why Texas A&M is struggling with a .500 overall record and only having 1 SEC victory in 4 conference games.
Texas A&M, and Elko, will look to move forward in Week 7 with a nonconference home matchup against The Citadel on tap. Here is what the Kalshi market is currently saying about the Aggies’ chances to take out their frustrations on the Bulldogs on Saturday in College Station (1 p.m. ET, SEC Network+):
