Mike Elko explains why he believes Marcel Reed didn’t garner enough respect in 2024
It’s safe to say that Marcel Reed had an up and down first season as the starting quarterback at Texas A&M.
After redshirting in 2023, the Nashville native threw for 1,864 yards and 15 touchdowns while completing 61% of his passes. Reed even tacked on 543 yards and seven touchdowns via the ground, all of which came in just 11 appearances.
But 6 interceptions in his final five starts, four of which were defeats, prompted some to doubt Reed’s ability to be an effective quarterback in the SEC.
Conversely, his head coach Mike Elko believes that the young quarterback shined in adverse situations and deserves more respect because of it according to TexAgs’ report.
“He understands how the reps in practice translate over to a game,” Elko said of Reed. “There was a lot thrown at him last year, and I don’t think he gets the respect for the year he had given the circumstances around him. We’re real excited to see his development.”
Reed and the Aggies open their 2025 campaign by hosting in-state foe UTSA on Saturday night. That matchup is followed by a home date with Utah State, a road trip to take on Notre Dame and a bye week before SEC play ramps up in late September.
