Mike Norvell was fired by Florida State on Sunday, a day after the Seminoles lost to Clemson. Fans have been calling for his firing for a while, as there was even a banner flown above the stadium before the game calling for the coach to be fired.
The decision was a big one for the Seminoles, as it isn’t cheap. According to Pete Thamel, Norvell will be owed $50.3 million by the school. It’s the third-largest buyout in college football history, behind Jimbo Fisher (Texas A&M) and Brian Kelly (LSU).
Norvell had the Seminoles looking like a College Football Playoff team in 2023, as the Seminoles were 13-0 after an ACC Championship win. However, QB Jordan Travis was hurt, and the Seminoles were left out as the CFP Committee decided they weren’t a top 4 team without Travis.
The Seminoles would lose the bowl game to Georgia 63-3, and since being left out, they went 10-23 in Norvell’s final 33 games.
Having a buyout that big puts the school in a tough spot. They are going to have to spend a lot of money in bringing in a big-time coach, while also having the necessary amount of money to go out there and build a team that is capable of contending.
