Mizzou basketball will be down an experienced guard for the remainder of the season.

Tigers head coach Dennis Gates announced Tuesday that guard John Tonje will be sidelined due to the lingering effects of a preseason injury.

“John has been hampered by an offseason foot injury this entire year,” Gates said in a program release. “He was one of our best players during summer workouts before suffering the setback and, unfortunately, the injury has prevented him from being completely healthy and reaching the levels he is accustomed to. We look forward to him taking the proper amount of time to fully recover and then showcasing his skills and complete potential again in the future.”

Tonje joined MU after spending 2019-2023 at Colorado State. He has played 78 minutes over 8 contests, most recently logging 12 minutes in the South Carolina game on Saturday.

Gates is in his second season as Mizzou’s head coach. The Tigers exceeded expectations in Year 1, posting a 25-10 overall record, going 11-7 in conference play. Mizzou made the 2023 NCAA Tournament, reaching the Round of 32 with a win over Utah State.

Year 2, however, has not gone as planned. The Tigers are 8-8 on the year and 0-3 in SEC play following the 71-69 overtime loss to South Carolina. It doesn’t get any easier, as Mizzou is on the road Tuesday at Alabama (7 p.m. ET, SEC Network). UA is tied with Auburn atop the SEC standings, 3-0 in SEC play this season.
