A seismic change is reportedly coming for the college football transfer portal. According to Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, the NCAA Football Oversight Committee voted on Thursday to support 1 transfer portal window that would be January annually.

The Administrative Committee will also still have to adopt the change later and the 10-day window is projected to kick off on Jan. 2.

Dellenger also explained that since this is “Emergency Legislation”, the Administrative Committee needs to approve it by Oct. 1 for it to be enacted this year. The NCAA is currently in the middle of reconfiguring and building up committees via the revised governing system.

The transfer portal is specifically a database, application, and compliance tool that facilitates the system for student athletes that want to test the waters. The transfer portal began on October 15, 2018, with the aim being to have transparent protocols in place for player movement.

As it relates specifically to college football, student athletes have been able to transfer without having to sit out a year since 2021. In 2024, the NCAA ratified a modification to the transfer rule which allowed immediately eligibility for athletes regardless of the amount of times they’ve transferred.
