The Cincinnati Bengals went a dismal 2-14 in 2019, earning them the No. 1 overall pick. The Bengals used that choice on LSU QB Joe Burrow.
But, Burrow can’t save the franchise by himself. He’ll need organizational support in order to have success in Cincinnati.
NFL.com analyst Bucky Brooks said on the NFL Network this week that he thinks the Bengals are doing some good things this offseason to help Burrow succeed (via 247Sports):
“(Urban Meyer) talked about a quarterback needing to be surrounded by playmakers and they also need to be supported by a coach,” Brooks said. “When I look at the Cincinnati Bengals, they certainly have that in place. There are 3 things that you have to have as a young quarterback. You have to have play callers. You have to have playmakers and you have to have protection. And when I look at the Cincinnati Bengals, they can check off those boxes.
“Zac Taylor has talked to Burrow about using some of the concepts that he liked at LSU. To me, that’s going to help him jump in earlier. The playmakers that they have around him — AJ Green, Tyler Boyd, Joe Mixon — that is going to enable him to be a pass-first point guard. With Jonah Williams there, a 2019 first-round pick, he gives him the protection up front. Within the culture, they drafted 6 team captains this year and added 6 defensive free agents that came from playoff teams. Right now, they’re trying to put the right people around Joe Burrow to help him succeed.”
We’ll see if the Bengals can start their turnaround this fall. With Andy Dalton off to Dallas, the starting job will be Burrow’s.
