NFL legend to serve as Oklahoma’s interim OC for rest of 2026 season, per report
The Oklahoma Sooners finally, much to the happiness of their fans, relieved offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle of his duties on Monday. Oklahoma averaged just 22.0 points per game through eight contests this season with Arbuckle, second-fewest in the SEC.
With Arbuckle out of the picture, the Sooners need a new voice on offense. And Brent Venables is calling on someone with immense NFL experience to fill the void.
According to Sooner Scoop, Oklahoma’s tight end coach Jason Witten will handle the Sooners’ playcalling duties for the remainder of the season.
Witten, the longtime Dallas Cowboys tight end, joined Oklahoma’s staff this season after five years as the head coach of Liberty Christian School (2021-25) in Texas. He led the Warriors to two state championships in his tenure as their coach and play-caller.
Witten came to Norman to help the Sooners incorporate the tight end into their red zone passing attack. Despite making the College Football Playoff in 2025-26, Oklahoma threw just one touchdown pass to their tight ends last season. This year, sixth-year tight end Rocky Beers leads the Sooners with four receiving touchdowns.
The Sooners (4-4, 2-3 SEC) take on the Florida Gators (5-3, 3-3 SEC) on Saturday night (7:45 p.m. ET) in Witten’s first game as their play caller.
